When did it become legal to change your gender?

In the United States, there is no one answer to this question as different laws apply in different states. However, in most cases, people can change their gender legally if they have undergone surgery and/or hormone therapy to transition from one gender to another. This process is often referred to as gender confirmation surgery or sex reassignment surgery.

The earliest case of a legal change of gender was that of Christine Jorgensen, who underwent sex reassignment surgery in Denmark in 1952. At the time, her operation was not recognized by the US government, so she had to travel back and forth between Europe and America in order to be able to legally identify as a woman. In 1974, however, the US government passed a law recognizing sex reassignment surgeries for federal purposes.

Since then, many other countries have followed suit and made it legal for transgender people to change their genders without having Surgery. In some places - like India - transgender people are even recognised as a third gender category altogether.
