Pregnant women need 400 micrograms of folate (a form of folic acid) a day; pregnant women who eat enough folate may help prevent major birth defects of their baby's brain or spine. Some health professionals recommend that all women who could become pregnant take a daily multivitamin with 400 micrograms of folate even if they are not planning to get pregnant because about half of pregnancies are unplanned.
